Good point. I’d go further: labels are just short hand for episodic phenomena. By that I mean, we think of the first iPhone as taking the form of this smashed bar of soap, but really what Apple has produced in the iPad is an iPhone stretched and elongated. With the iPad Air, they took the MacBook Air and sliced of the keyboard. They’re basically just making computing cocktails, emphasizing different form factors and ingredients to sell variants of what ultimately all derive from the same core concept: a speedy computer that fits in our hands and is light enough to take everywhere. If we remove the labels and see these devices as just different computer designs, they’re more like cars: similar in the same basic functionality with slight advancements in every successive generation. We get so caught up in what an “iPhone” is that we forget that it’s just a made up term to make addressing a particular Apple product category more convenient. Fred of the baggage of these labels, we can, add you do, began to look more closely at what our evolving relationship to computing access apparatuses can become.
