I’m less interesting in news dissemination over chat-based channels and assisting with understanding and comprehension. While the “human-in-the-loop” model may not “scale” (as we think of scaling today) that doesn’t mean that there won’t be augmented approaches in the future, or where communities won’t be able to come together on the fly to dissect a particular story and then dissipate.
On this front, it’s interesting to consider Sensay. If Purple and Sensay had a baby, it might be superior way to understand and interact with the news in a way that’s more educational and comprehensible for more people than today’s standard, non-interactive model.
To be clear — news is perhaps one of the less interesting applications of conversational software design. If anything, news publishers will probably flock to messaging to break through the notification anxiety that leads many users to block apps from sending any notifications at all. Since most users are unlikely to block messaging apps’ notifications, CNN and others can reach users through this new channel more easily. At least for a period of time.
