Keep in mind that I started blogging in 2004. I’ve probably got a few years of experience on you.

Also, communicating complex ideas simply and effectively is damn hard. I’m fortunate in that I’m a visual thinker, so usually I try to just describe the pictures that my mind flashes to me verbally. Oftentimes it connects, but not always — and so then I try again. My work is never done.

Also, I’d recommend trying an app like Hemingway or Espresso. They’ll help you become extremely picky with your words, and to focus on expressing yourself simply and directly.

You mentioned my latest sponsored post — and it was both a labor of love, and one that I rewrote probably a dozen times. I took out entire sections. To become a good writer I’ve learned that you have to become an obsessive deleter. Your first draft is like the sculptor’s lump of clay: the initial mass which you slowly shape into a desirable form.

Don’t get discouraged; keep at it. And, write for yourself. Not for anyone else.
